Istanbul Archeology Museums, which were first established by Osman Hamdi Bey as the “Müze-i Hümayun” in other words the Imperial Museum and were opened for visitors in 1891, are located in Sultanahmet town of Istanbul, on the uphill road that goes from Gülhane Park to Topkapı Palace that is called the Osman Hamdi Bey road.
The reason for the plurality in its name, is because it includes three different museums under its administration, namely the Archeology Museum, the Museum of Oriental Antiquities and Tiled Pavilion Museum. The Museum of Oriental Antiquities displays Arabic, Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Eastern Anatolian works of art. The Tiled Pavilion Museum that was built in 1472 on the other hand is Fatih Sultan Mehmet’s hunting mansion, and displays works of art that belong to the Ottoman – Art of Tile Making. Istanbul Archeology Museums, which are home to various works of art left by the civilizations that have marked different eras throughout history, are among the first ten museums designed and used as a museum building around the world. In 1992, it was also selected as the “Museum of the Year” by the European Council.
